After Your Root Canal

The infected tissue inside your tooth has been cleaned out and sealed. Most people feel significantly better within a day or two — the tooth that was hurting before should now be calm.

Quick reference

  • Mild tenderness when biting on the tooth for 3–5 days is normal as the area heals.
  • Take any prescribed medication exactly as directed. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories (like ibuprofen) help most patients.
  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it has its permanent restoration (crown or filling) placed.
  • Brush and floss normally — keeping the area clean speeds healing.
  • Don't skip the follow-up appointment to place the final crown or filling — without it, the tooth can fracture.
Call us if you have concerns. Call us at 519-944-5757 if swelling appears or increases, pain gets worse instead of better, or the temporary filling falls out.
